Field Notes

Occasional notes on surveying, mapping and getting lost professionally.

On benchmarks and patience

Every control point has a story. Most of them involve waiting for the sky to clear, a tripod settling into soft ground, and the quiet satisfaction when the residuals finally agree with each other.

Reading old maps

Old survey sheets are honest documents. The ink fades, the paper warps, but the geometry remembers what the landscape has forgotten.

Kit list, rainy season

Rain cover for the total station, spare batteries in a dry bag, and a notebook that does not mind being damp. Everything else is negotiable.
